Let's look at Google's +1 experiment going on right now. If you choose to have this feature installed, you will be able to suggest web sites that appear in the search just by clicking on the button next to the link.
Google tells us that this feature will allow those who use it to "give anything your public approval....so friends, contacts, and anyone else can find the best stuff in their own search". The +1 tool can also be used for collecting recommendations from Google according to your own interests and likes.
Facebook has of course been very popular with it's own "like" option. Google now plans to put the button on their pages. They also go on to really let it be known that anything that users decide to share through the +1 feature will be VERY public. So be careful. You mom might be watching, lol!!
So...you DON'T want to use this feature if you plan on conducting any "private" activities while surfing the net. Such as coupon clipping. Just kidding....I think. The purpose is to allow you to divulge any enjoyable information with friends or the vast public. Of course....just because you may choose to use this service, you DON'T have to click the actual "+1" button if you are not in a sharing mood. You do have to be signed into your own Google account to make use of this.
As you are well aware, you don't need a Google account to use it for just searching. You can always just log off or use the private option in your browser which will log you out during your session.
Now...even though Google has yet to mention plans on making this option profitable, it's obvious that money can easily be made by collecting personal data on what holds people's interests and then showing them relevant ads. That's already proven to be the magic formula with Facebook. Just by obtaining that info, ads are much more targeted which = fatter profits and higher ad rates.
I don't have a problem at all with Google or Facebook doing this. It's the way that social advertising has to work. You can bet that those of you involved in marketing can and will benefit from this. The more popular you get on the social scene, the more popular your sites will become, and the more you benefit!! This is the new SEO folks....and I like it!!
